April Stools Day, A Success!

The Friends of Charlestown Dog Parks gathered, 20 people strong (and several canine friends) to clean up Charlestown's sidewalks and parks. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated dog owners and friends Paul Revere Park, the Training Field, the Monument, the Harbor Walk, and the streets of 02129 are a little less dirty today. We collected over 26 bags full of "waste" and "debris". The city of Boston was kind to lend us shovels, gloves, and rakes, while vendors RASCODOG gave us tons of dog baggies and awesome leashes. Michelle, owner of Durty Harry's brought water and goodies as well.

Friends of Charlestown Dog Parks Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Friends of Charlestown Dog Parks occurred last night at the Zelma Lacey House at 6pm. 12 members were in attendance. Several ideas were brought up, including an "April Stools" cleanup in town (in light of the relative MESS that is Charlestown right now and in the spring when the snow melts), Monday night gatherings with coffee at Paul Revere (starting in the early spring), and a discussion about installing a bench at the 'dog park' on Medford Street.

The board is making slow progress in getting the state/city to respond to the need for a dog park, but progress still.

Halloween Goes To The Dogs!!!!

The Friends were pleased to see so many gorgeously dressed dogs at Paul Revere Park on Halloween before the Monument Square Parade. Of note were a few lab mixes dressed as jailbirds, a lady-bug pug, a silly looking lizard pooch, and of course, Belle as a hot dog.

BUNKER HILL PARADE INFORMATION

Please join us at 1pm on HUNTER STREET (between Bunker and Vine near Hayes Square) for the big march. Look for the big WHITE pick-up truck that will lead the dogs on parade.

This week's Charlestown Bridge has the line up and parade route-we will be walking just behind the Mummers.

Please bring all the proper gear (baggies, water, etc) and have your pooch on a leash for the parade.

Recap of Charlestown Neighborhood Council Meeting: Nov 8th, 2007

With roughly 30 proponents of the Dog Park sitting quietly in the back of the basement of the Knights of Columbus, the Charlestown Neighborhood Council spoke on the dog park issue. Some concerns were raised, and some clarifications were made by Chris Remmes, the Alpha Male of the Friends of The Charlestown Dog Park. The Friends were comended for their quick organization and call to action, and were, across the board, supported by the Neighborhood Council. Bill Galvin, representative of Precinct 3 in Charlestown, showed particularly strong support, and spoke for the dog park on behalf of the Friends, citing that the parcel of land (the parcel abutting the highway that is overgrown with weeds) would be an ideal place for a dog park.The CNC, by the nights end, agreed to write a letter to the parties that be in support of this initiative.

City Square Park Supports Dog Park Initiative

Ken Stone, Governor of City Square Park, is a proponent of the Dog Park in Charlestown. He has written a letter in support of this initiative to Richard Sullivan, Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation lending the Friends of City Square support. He cites that dog owners and non-dog owners will benefit from creating a space specifically designated for canines. The current use of Paul Revere Park, he mentions, is primarily by (well-behaved for the most part) dogs, but that a dog park in the parcel mentioned at the Neighbor Council, would be better suited as a run based on its distance from the children's play area and the pedestrian walkway.

Stone sees the safety of the dogs improving with the creation of a dog park. Owners will be able to exercise their canine friends without fear of cars and potential problems with pedestrians.

The letter will be sent on Monday November 12, 2007.
